Last summer, I ordered a mystery box of yarn from Lion Brand yarns and posted about it here. One of the yarns was Ice Cream Roving Yarn.
What makes a yarn roving, you might ask? Roving means that the yarn has variable thickness, which gives the finished piece great texture.
I was already a big fan of the regular Ice Cream Yarn for baby blankets, so I decided to make another.
I made this delicate, soft blanket using three skeins in the Double Bubble colorway with the Secret Garden Round Blanket pattern from Kristen Holloway Designs. The pattern is free or you can purchase a easy-to-print PDF for a small fee.
That blanket in itself would have been enough for a blog post, but guess what? I bought more yarn, and then promptly forgot about it.
There is nothing more shameful that cleaning the guest room and finding an unopened box of yarn from who-knows-when. I don’t really remembering ordering it, but when I opened that large box I found 9 skeins of Ice Cream Yarn in three different colorways!
I dug into the first set and used one of my favorite patterns–the Modern Granny Square Blanket. In the Dots colorway, it worked up quickly and shot up the ranks to one of my favorite blankets. I like this color scheme because it can work for a boy or a girl.
I searched for a fitting pattern for the second colorway, Pixie Stix, and decided that it was screaming to be a star. I have done a lot of 12-point star blankets, but decided on a 5-point star blanket for this one. This one is again soft and cuddly. The only downside to a five-point star is that there seems to be a lot of wasted space, but maybe the arms would turn out to be great for swaddling? Three skeins again made it the perfect size.
At this point (no pun intended), I had a theme going: shapes. With the square and star fresh in my mind, I went back to a circle for the last skeins of yarn. Using the color Candy Dots and the Circular Baby Blanket Pattern by Crochet ‘n Create, this last blanket has a wonderful, ruffling texture. It will never lay truly flat, but the texture is amazing.
This were all quick and easy blankets, literally, in every shape and size. If you’ve got some of this yarn lying around, shape up! And make a blanket.
Peace out, Heidi
