Of Commissions and Cuteness

“Will you make Long Dog for xx’s birthday?”

“I don’t know what that is, but sure.”

Fast forward a couple of weeks when I’m reminded that I totally forgot to make this special commission and had only a couple of days to complete it. I downloaded the pattern, located the yarn, and began.

It took me a few hours. My hand hurts. But it is so squishy and soft. I wish I could see the little one’s face when she opens this present from mom and dad.

This is Long Dog. Apparently he is from the show Bluey. I have never seen Bluey as my kids are almost all in the double digits. According to my friend, “If you want to laugh and cry and have your heart melted, watch a couple of episodes of Bluey.”

I found a pattern on Etsy. (It was on sale, too! Score!) The instructions allowed me to pick my own yarn and adjust the size of the finished product accordingly. This dog is at least 18″ long.

I used some “blanket” yarn that I had in my stash. Using an M/N hook, I was able to make quick progress of this cute stuffy. Sometimes blanket yarn can be hard to use for color changes, etc. Because this is a stuffed toy, the ends are easily hidden inside. I don’t love making amigurumi, but I think I’ve found a new favorite yarn to use when I so. I’ve said it before, but it’s so squishy and soft. I love it.

My unwritten rules for commissions

Taking commissions is tricky business as it takes time and satisfaction is not guaranteed, so I have some personal rules for commissions.

  1. I do not do commissions for people I don’t know. Period.
  2. I will only accept commissions if I have time to complete them. If I say “no,” it’s likely that my schedule is just too full.
  3. I will tell you if it is cheaper to buy a current listing on Etsy or elsewhere instead of having me make it.
  4. Commissions are a great way to force myself to tackle something I wouldn’t otherwise make.
  5. I really enjoy making things for people and happily accept commissions when I can do them.

If you’re a crocheter, what’s your policy? Do you take commissions?

Stay tuned for more projects soon. The yarn is calling my name, so I must go.

Peace out–Heidi
