Gender Reveal Baby Blanket: buy the pattern HERE.
I never had a gender reveal party.
But I did find out the genders of each of my children. Once we found out, we wasted no time sharing the news with others over the good, old-fashioned telephone.
Lately, gender reveals have been getting a bad rap because of people starting forest fires (sorry, Smokey!) with their pink or blue fireworks or smothering wildlife with color canons. But what if there was a way to do a gender reveal safely, without a risk to anyone or any thing? What if it was physically impossible for your gender reveal device to cause harm?
Enter the Gender Reveal Baby Blanket. The only thing dangerous about this baby is the fact that it might put you to sleep too quickly. It’s so squishy and soft and cozy…and…and…
And you get to keep it forever. You can announce your baby’s gender with it, then cuddle him or her in the hospital or let baby use it for tummy time on the floor.
How Does It Work?
You might be thinking, “Isn’t that just a baby blanket? What makes it so special?” This blanket has been carefully crafted so that a small heart will appear on the inside without being able to be seen from the outside. The multicolored border provides for a bit of eye trickery in case somehow a bit of the heart were to show through. I’ve included instructions on how to fold and how to reveal the blanket.
For my blanket, I used a combination of Lion Brand I Wanna Make a Blankie yarn in Optic White and Bernat Baby Blanket yarn in Baby Pink and Baby Blue. If you don’t want to mix yarns, you can make the whole blanket with the Baby Blanket yarn.
Spoiler alert: The blanket I made reveals the baby to be a girl, but to make one for a boy, simply change the heart from pink to blue. Having twins? Tweak the pattern to include two hearts instead of one. As long as they are next to each other, they should still be rolled away to secrecy inside the blanket.
This blanket has been a labor of love (see what I did there?) for me as I tried many different iterations before finding one that I liked and worked like I wanted it to. It’s incubation period was a mere six months, not quite a full pregnancy.
