Painter and Art Guru Bob Ross used to say, “We don’t make mistakes, just happy little accidents.” In crochet, accidents make our item unique and one-of-a-kind.
Don’t go looking for stitch flaws in this blanket (though there are some I’m sure), because that’s not the kind of accident I’m referring to. I picked up a small ball of leftover yarn, not knowing what to make from it. It was supposed to be one of those stashbusting projects that uses up yarn, but I ended up buying another three skeins to complete it, so I guess that didn’t work out for me!
A quick search for circle granny square blankets brought up this tutorial. I set out to make the centers for my baby blanket with no idea how many to make or what the border color would be or how long my yarn would last.
The end result was this:
I couldn’t be happier with how it turned out. I took the tutorial’s advice and connected each square using a single crochet, which created ridges on the blanket.
The border was a round of sc, a round of hdc, a round of bpdc, another round of sc, then a shell border.
When it was finished this blanket reminded me of the type of cherished heirloom grandmas would make for their grandbabies–simple, gender-neutral, classic.
The blanket measures about 30″x40″ inches and used Lion Brand Ice Cream Yarn in Cake Batter and Lion Brand Baby Soft Yarn in White.
