“Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above,” James 1:17. We teach our children that everything we do is to be done for the glory of God. Whether that is sports, art, singing, housework, crocheting, we should use our gifts for God’s kingdom.
This is hard, and I fail all of the time.
But when the call is issued for crocheted goods for a good cause, I answer.
Recently a friend posted about a need for knit and crocheted hats to be given to the homeless. I said, “Count me in.”
My friend’s friend had a son who died a few years ago at the age of 19. On her blog, she talks about the foundation they started in memory of her son: “When the unthinkable does happen, as a parent, all you want to do is find some way to keep the memory of your child alive. Our solution for that was starting the fund in Joe’s name.”
As part of the Pittsburgh Foundation the Joseph Kimutis Memorial Fund strives to help those in need. Here’s what the page says, “The Joseph Kimutis Memorial Fund was established in memory of Joe, who died in March 2011 at the age of 19. Joe was a kind and compassionate person who loved making people laugh; the fund carries on his kindness and compassion through financial support to those experiencing hardship in our community.
“To honor his joyful spirit, the fund provides educational scholarships to students at Our Lady of Grace, Seton-LaSalle High School, and other schools who demonstrate strong character through acts of kindness and compassion. The fund also provides grants to food banks, shelters, and other organizations, offering support to Pittsburgh-area families and individuals in need.”
Joes’s mother says on her blog, “One blessing that has come from this tragedy is a bright light now shines on the kindness and goodness of the people around us. Getting people to step up, volunteer, donate time, money and their talents has been easy. It is not a hard sell. So many people who step up to help us now did not even know Joe in this lifetime. They show up and help because in some way they have seen the benefit of the distribution of our grants, scholarships and donations.”
Right now the foundation is request hats for the homeless.
Hats I can do. In fact, last month my Annie’s Caring Crochet Kit Club was a trio of hats. They say you can donate to the charity they are supporting (in this case, Warmth for All based out of Oregon) or the charity of your choice. I’m choosing to send my hats, plus five others, to the Joesph Kimutis FOR GOOD Memorial Fund.
The pattern was the Take 60 Hat. I enjoyed the pattern so much, I made three more. One hat works up in less than half an hour. I know, because last night at 11:30, I challenged myself to make one more before midnight and succeeded!
The other hat I made is the 30 Minute Beginner Crochet Slouchy Hat by Sewrella. Each hat took one skein of Lion Brand Hometown USA yarn and also worked up quickly.
Joe’s mom is requesting hats. Let’s blow that number our of the water!
