Borders · Temperature blanket

Border Patrol

This post should be of my completed Temperature Blanket, but I still have some ends to weave in, and I refuse to publish it as finished until that happens.

Instead, I thought I’d give you a closer look at my border.

This was a tricky border to create. The way I joined the squares makes the blanket rather stretchy. If I put too tight of a border on it, it would not look good. If the border was too heavy, it wouldn’t look good.

I just kind of made this up as I went.

My finished border.

I’m very happy with how it turned out. I had wanted to make the border into a temperature gauge, but I wasn’t sure how to do it. This has just a hint of it without being too overwhelming.

When you get to the last corner square, 11dc in that stitch. Continue in the same pattern beginning with sc then 7dc. Continue around. Sl st to first sc. Fasten off.

This is what the first round of the border will look like. You can finish the blanket with just this round if you want to. There will be a larger bump in the middle of each square.

Round 2: Attach white yarn with a slip st in the back loop only (BLO) of any sc. Ch 3, 2dc in same st. Sk 2 st, bpsc around the center st of the fan. [3dc in the BLO of the next sc, bpsc around the center st of the fan] to corner. 5dc in the last sc before corner, bpsc around the center of the 11dc fan, 5 dc in the BLO of next sc. Repeat [ ] and corners around. Sl st to first sc, and fasten off.

Round 3: Attach background color to the first of 3dc with a standing sc. Sc in next 2 st. [Insert hook through the center of the fan in round 1 and the sc in round 2 and sc in that st. Sc in next three st.] Repeat from [ to ] to corner. 5 hdc in corner st. Continue around in the same pattern.

The border after Round 3. You can stop here if you want to.

Round 4: Join any color with standing bphdc in any st. Bphdc in each st around with 3 st in corners. For my blanket, I did sets of 25 st before changing to the next color. It did not work out perfectly, so I just faked it at the end. Join with st st to first bphdc and fasten off. Weave in all ends!

Note: For seamless color changes, change color in the last part of the previous st. So, in a hdc, you would yarn over and pull up a loop in color A, drop color A, pick up color B, and pull through the three loops on the hook.

The finished border!

What type of border would you put on your temperature blanket?
