Temperature Blanket 2019: The Pattern

I’ve stalled on my 2018 Temperature Blanket again as I wait for more yarn to arrive in the mail. The problem with never having done it before is that I didn’t know how much yarn I would need. Obviously, more than I thought!

So, since I am waiting, I took the opportunity to work through my vision for my 2019 blanket. Here it is!

Each day will have two colors: A high and a low. The entire square will be worked in the moss stitch.

I will be using these colors as my guide. You can read more about the colors here.

Pattern:

Yarn: Any variety of worsted weight yarn.

Hook: H-hook (5 mm)

Gauge: The first 5 rounds will form a 3 inch square.

Finished size: Without a border, the blanket should total 54″ x 72″.

Round 1: With the color for Day 1 Low (LC-low color), make a double magic circle. I prefer this method. In magic circle, with LC, make 3 sc, ch 3, 3 sc, ch 3. Switch to High Color (HC) in the last chain. 3 sc, ch 3, 3 sc, ch 3 all in magic ring. Sl st to first sc. Fasten off. You will want to weave in the ends as you go because there will be many.

Day 1 will form the inner square of your month’s square. Pull the center string as tight as possible.

Round 2: With LC, attach yarn with a sl st to the last ch 3 space (the day before’s HC). Sc in Ch 3 sp. Ch 1, sk 1, sc in next st. Ch 1, sk 1, sc in ch 3 space. Ch 3, sc in same space. Ch 1, sk 1, sc in next st. Ch 1, sk 1, sc in ch 3 space. Ch 3, switching to HC in last ch. Sc in same ch 3 space. Ch 1, sk 1, [sc, ch 3, sc] in ch 3 space. Ch 1, sk 1, sc in next st. Ch 1, sk 1, sc in ch 3 space. Ch 3. Attach with sl st to first st made. Fasten off. Weave in ends.

Round 3: With LC, attach yarn with a sl st to the last ch 3 space (the day before’s HC). Sc in same space. [Ch 1, sk 1, sc] across ending with ch 1, sk 1. [Sc, ch 3, sc] in ch 3 space. [Ch 1, sk 1, sc] across ending with ch 1, sk 1. Sc in ch 3 space. Ch 3, switching to HC in last chain. Sc in same ch 3 space. [Ch 1, sk 1, sc] across ending with ch 1, sk 1. [Sc, ch 3, sc] in ch 3 space. [Ch 1, sk 1, sc] across ending with ch 1, sk 1. Sc in ch 3 space, ch 3. Attach with sl st to starting sc.

Note: This row will repeat for the rest of the square. You will want to alternate starting with the HC and LC (opposite corners) to keep the square square. Each square will have 31 rows. If the month does not have 31 days, you may pick a neutral color to complete the square.

Rounds 4-31: Repeat Row 3.

After Round 5, it will look like this:

And it should measure 3″ across.

I estimate that each month’s square will measure 18″. Putting 3 months across and 4 up and down, the finished blanket should measure around 54 x 72 inches.

I can’t wait to get started. Will you join me?
