Winter Wonderland Blanket

The Winter Wonderland Blanket has been a labor of love. I really wanted to make an afghan that was whimsical, holiday-themed, and pretty. This is what I ended up with.

It reminds me of a Christmas tree, but also an evergreen forest covered in snow. The variation in the height of the trees gives it visual interest.

I fell in love with the yarn–Herrschners Holiday Pastry Puff in Peppermint–though I had never used it before. The content is 30% wool and 70% acrylic. It is soft to the touch, and the weight is comforting. If you’ve ever used Caron Simply Soft for a blanket, this yarn has a similar heaviness to it–a very comforting weight.

The tree motif ended up being very easy to modify to make the tree larger or smaller. Each section of trees is 23 st wide, so if you want to make the blanket bigger, you would need to add multiples of 23. The length of the pattern may seem daunting, but it is easily memorized. Once you know how the pattern works, you will rarely need to look at it.

Notes: 

  • Each row should have 138 st.
  • Ch 2 at the beginning of each row counts as a dc.
  • Every even row is the same: 138 sc.

Yarn: 8 skeins of Herrschners Holiday Pastry Puff in Peppermint.

Hook: H-hook (5 mm)

Gauge: 16 st x 10 rows (alternating dc & sc) = 4″

Size: Blanket measures 36″ x 46″

Row 1: Foundation Double Crochet 138. Or Ch 140, dc in 4th ch from the hook and each ch across. (138 dc)

Row 2: Ch 1, turn. Sc in each st across. The last sc will be in the turning ch or beginning ch of the previous row. (138 sc)

Row 3: Ch 2, turn. Dc in next st and each st across. (138 dc)

Row 4: Repeat Row 2.

Row 5: Ch 2, turn, dc in next seven stitches. [*FPDTC around each of the next 2 st. Skip 2 st (behind FPDTC), dc in next three st. FPDTC around each of the next 2 st. Skip 2 st.** Dc in next 16 st] Repeat 5 times. Work from * to ** one more time. Dc in last 8 st.

Row 6: Repeat Row 2.

Row 7: Repeat Row 5 working the FPDTC around the FPDTC two rows below.

Row 8: Repeat Row 2. From now through the rest of the pattern, I will not be including the instructions for the even rows. You will repeat Row 2 for every even row.

Row 9: Ch 2, turn, dc in next 4 st. [FPDTC around each of the 2 st two rows below the last dc worked. Sk 2, Dc in next 9 st. Sk 2.
