Welcome to Week 2 of the Alphabet Blocks Crochet Along. (If you’re just joining us, make sure you check out this post from Week 1 first.) This week we will be putting together the second strip. It will also be worked from the bottom to the top, but will attach to the first strip as you go. It sounds complicated, but it’s not. Once you get the hange of it, it will seem like old hat.

I’m calling the special stich needed to complete join a CDC-Connecting Double Crochet. If you would prefer to do each strip individually and sew together in the end, simply substitute a dc where the cdc would be.

The other new term is Ch 2 Join, which refers to the ch 2 and sl st to strip one. See photo tutorial below.

As a reminder before we get started. When I refer to a st, I am refereing to either a ch or a dc or the beginning ch 2.

Alphabet Blocks CAL Strip 2, Week 2

X Block

Row 1: With right side facing (you’ll know it’s the right side because the letters won’t be backwards), attach color F to the bottom of the st on the bottom right side with a sl st (in my blanket, that’s the bottom peach square).

Ch 25. DC in 3rd ch from hook. DC in next 22 ch.

YO, insert hook in same stitch as join, pull up a loop. Pull yarn through 2 loops. Insert hook in top of same stitch as join. Pull up a loop. Pull through all three loops. (This will look a little sloppy, but it won’t in the end).

 

Row 2: Ch 2, Sl st in top of the last stitch of Row 2. Turn (Ch 2 Join made). Dc in next 5 st. Ch 1, sk 1, dc in next 9 st, ch 1, sk 1, dc in last 7 st.

Row 3: Ch 2, dc in next 6 st. Ch 1, sk 1, dc in next 9 st. Ch 1, sk 1, dc in next 5 st. CDC in last st. (see photo tutorial above)

Row 4: Repeat Row 2.

Row 5: Ch 2, dc in next 8 st. Ch 1, sk 1, dc in next 5 st. Ch 1, sk 1, dc in next 7 st. CDC in last st.

Row 6: Ch 2 Join, dc in next 7 st. Ch 1, sk 1, dc in next 5 st. Ch 1, sk 1, dc in next 9 st.

Row 7: Ch 2, dc in next 10 st. [Ch 1, sk 1, DC] twice. Dc in next 8 st, CDC in last st.

Row 8: Ch 2 Join, dc in next 7 st. Ch 1, sk 1, dc in next 5 st. Ch 1, sk 1, dc in last 9 st.

Row 9: Ch 2, dc in next 8 st. Ch 1, sk 1, dc in next 5 st. Ch 1, sk 1, dc in next 7 st, CDC in last st.

Row 10: Ch 2 Join, dc in next 5 st. Ch 1, sk 1, dc in next 9 st. Ch 1, sk 1, dc in next 7 st.

Row 11: Ch 3, dc in next 6 st. Ch 1, sk 1, dc in next 9 st. Ch 1, sk 1, dc in next 5 st, CDC in last st.

Row 12: Ch 2 Join, dc in next 23 st changing to color A in last st if you’re changing colors.

T Block

Row 13: Ch 2, dc in next 22 st. CDC in last st.

Row 14: Ch 2 Join, dc in next 11 st. Ch 1, sk 1, dc in last 11 st.

Row 15: Ch 2, dc in next 10 st. Ch 1, sk 1, dc in next 11 st, CDC in last st.

Rows 16-22: Repeat rows 2 and 3, three times and row 2 once.

Row 23: Ch 2, dc in next 6 st. [Ch 1, sk 1, dc] 6 times, dc in next 4, CDC in last st.

Row 24: Repeat Row 12, changing to color B in last st.

O Block

Row 25: Repeat Row 13.

Row 26: Ch 2 Join, Dc in next 9 st. [Ch 1, sk 1, DC] two times. Dc in last 7 st.

Row 27: Ch 2, dc in next 9 st. Ch 1, sk 1, dc in next 5 st. Ch 1, sk 1, dc in next 7, CDC in last st.

Row 28: Ch 2 Join,  dc in next 5 st. Ch 1, sk 1, dc in next 9 st. Ch 1, sk 1, dc in last 7 st.

Row 29: Ch 2, dc in next 6 st. Ch 1, sk 1, dc in next 9 st. Ch 1, sk 1, dc in next 5 st, CDC in last st.

Rows 30-33: Repeat rows 4 and 5 twice.

Row 34: Ch 2 Join, dc in next 7 st. Ch 1, sk 1, dc in next 5 st. Ch 1, sk 1, dc in last 9 st.

Row 35: Ch 2, dc in next 10 st. [Ch 1, sk 1, dc] 2 times. Dc in next 8 st. CDC in last st.

Row 36: Repeat Row 12, changing to color C in last st.

J Block

Row 37: Repeat Row 13.

Row 38: Ch 2 Join, dc in next 9 st. [Ch 1, sk 1, dc] 2 times. Dc in last 10 st.

Row 39: Ch 2, dc in next 10 st. Ch 1, sk 1, dc in next 3 st. Ch 1, sk 1, dc in next 7 st, CDC in last st.

Row 40: Ch 2 Join, dc in next 5 st. Ch 1, sk 1, dc in next 5 st. Ch 1, sk 1, dc in last 11 st.

Row 41: Ch 2, dc in next 10 st. Ch 1, sk 1, dc in next 5 st. Ch 1, sk 1, dc in next 5 st, CDC in last st.

Row 42: Ch 2 Join, dc in next 11 st. Ch 1, sk 1, dc in last 11 st.

Rows 44-46: Repeat rows 6 and 7 once and then row 6 again.

Row 47: Ch 2, dc in next 6 st. [Ch 1, sk 1, dc] 6 times. Dc in next 4 st. CDC in last st.

Row 48: Repeat Row 12, changing to color D in last st.

Block E

Row 49: Repeat Row 13.

Row 50: Ch 2 Join, dc in next 5 st. [Ch 1, sk 1, dc] 6 times. dc in last 6 st.

Row 51: Ch 2, dc in next 16 st. Ch 1, sk 1, dc in next 5 st. CDC in last st.

Row 52: Ch 2 Join, dc in next 5 st. Ch 1, sk 1, dc in last 17.

Rows 53-54: Repeat Rows 51 and 52.

Row 55: Ch 2, dc in next 10 st. [Ch 1, sk 1, dc] 4 times. DC 4, CDC in last st.

Row 56: Repeat Row 52.

Row 57: Repeat Row 51.

Row 58: Repeat Row 52.

Row 59: Ch 2, dc in next 6 st. [Ch 1, sk 1, dc] 6 times. Dc in next 4 st. CDC in last st.

Row 60: Repeat Row 12, changing to color E in last st.

A Block

Row 61: repeat Row 13.

Row 62: Ch 2 Join, dc in next 5 st. Ch 1, sk 1 dc in next 9 st. Ch 1, sk 1, dc in last 7 st.

Row 68: Repeat Row 62.

Row 69: Repeat Row 63.

Row 70: Ch 2 Join, dc in next 7 st. Ch 1, sk 1, dc in next 5 st. Ch 1, sk 1, dc in next 9 st.

Row 71: Ch 2, dc in next 10 st. [Ch 1, sk 1, dc] twice. Dc in next 8 st. CDC in last st.

Row 72: Repeat Row 12. Fasten off.
