I never in my life thought I’d be writing crochet patterns. I definitely didn’t think I’d be suggesting everyone else join me for a crochet along! But, Crochet Blooger 101 says to do stuff like this. So, I tried, and it’s fun!
This crochet combines two things I like: filet crochet and joining as you go.
Filet crochet is a technique that allows you to work from a graph to make a design from either the positive or negative spaces. Using this technique, you can basically make anything you want. I started with a big butterfly blanket for a friend’s baby. Then, I made my own pattern, but didn’t finishe the blanket. This seemed like the best way to make my alphabet blocks.
Joining as you go is an important element for me. I HATE sewing together squares at the end of a project. This method will be the same as I’ve used in my Color Block Baby Blanket. It’s easy to do once you get the hang of it, and I’ll show you how next week!
Well, without further ado, here we go!
If you’d prefer, a PDF of this complete pattern (parts 1-5 and borders) can be purchased for $2.99 here.
Alphabet Blocks Baby Blanket: Part 1
Yarn: I used Herrschners Teddy Bear Yarn in six colors in my first version. In the second version I used Lion Brand Mandala yarn.
Hook: For the Herrschners yarn use a G-hook. For the Mandala yarn, use an H-hook.
Abbreviations: dc-double crochet; ch-chain; st-stitch; sk st-skip stitch
Notes: In this pattern, the next stitch will be either a dc or a ch. The ch 2 at the beginning of each row counts as the first dc.

There you have it! I’m sure by now, you’ve realized the simplicity of this pattern. After writing the initial pattern, a strip only takes me one night of Netflix binging (approximately 4 hours).

Come back next week for part 2.
