Yay! Today is the first day of the Fruit Salad CAL. If this is your first time checking in, make sure you read this post and this one to pick a size blanket and find out which yarn to buy.
Thanks for joining me on this yarn journey! We’re going to jump right in and get started since you have lots of squares to make!
Citrus Square (Orange, Lime)
Abbreviations:
- MR – Magic Ring, I prefer to use this one.
- hdc – half double crochet
- dc – double crochet
- sc – single crochet
- yo – yarn over
- FPtrc – Front Post Triple/Treble Crochet – yo twice, insert hook from front to back around indicated stitch, yo, pull up a loop, *yo, pull through two loops on hook* three times
- BPdc/BPhdc/BPsc – Work stitch as normal around the indicated stitch inserting the hook from back to front
- ch – chain
Hook: I-hook or J-hook. I used an I-hook, but it’s a little tight. It is totally your preference. NOTE: On a number of rounds your work will curve up, but it will flatten as you crochet the next rows.
Yarn: I used Loops & Threads Impeccable yarn, but any worsted weight yarn should work.
Gauge: The finished square should measure 6″.
Pattern:
Round 1: With white yarn, make a MR. Ch 1, 8 hdc in MR. Join to the first st. Make sure to pull the MR tight. Fasten off.
Round 2: With green or orange yarn, CC (contrasting color), attach with sl st to any st or make foundation dc. Ch 2, dc in same st. 2 dc in each st around. Join with sl st in the top of ch 2. (16 st)
Round 3: Ch 2, [2 dc in next st, 1 dc in next st] around ending with 2 dc in last st. Join with sl st in the top of the ch 2. Fasten off. (24 st)
Round 4: Attach white with sl st in any st. Ch 1, sc in same st. Sc in next st. FPtrc around hdc in first round. NOTE: Do not skip the next stitch. [Sc in next 3 st, FPtrc around hdc in first round] 7 times, sc in next st and join to first sc. Fasten off. (32 st)
Round 5: Attach CC in any st with a sl st. Work 1 sc in each sc and 2 sc in each FPtrc around. Join. Fasten off. (40 st.)
Round 6: Attach white in any stitch with a standing bpdc or bp sl st and ch 2. Bpdc around same st. (NOTE: This can be tricky, but just aim at it going around below the previous st. Also, it does not matter which st you attach to, but you may want to make sure you attach in the same place in all of your squares for continuity.) [Ch 2, 2 bpdc around next st. Bphdc around next two stitches, bpsc around next 4 stitches, bphdc around next two stitches*, 2 bpdc around next st] 4 times ending at * on the 4th repeat. Join and sl st to corner space. (12 st on each side with 4 ch 2 corner spaces)
Round 7: Ch 2, dc, ch 1, 2 dc in corner space. [Dc in next 12 st.* {2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc} in corner space] 4 times ending at * on the fourth repeat. Join and sl st to corner space. (16 st on each side with 4 ch 1 corner spaces)
Round 8: NOTE: This round will be used to join the squares together, but will be done later, not as you go. Ch 1, [{sc, ch 2, sc in corner space}, ch 2, sk 2 st, sc in next st. {Ch 2, sk next st, sc in next st} across to corner. Ch 2.] 4 times. Join with st st in first sc. Fasten off. Weave in ends.
Make the number of Lime and Orange squares needed for your blanket. See this post.
Congratulations, you’ve finished the first step! Check back next week for the next step in making your Fruit Salad Blanket!
