The Almost Rug

A year and a half ago, my husband installed new hardwood floors throughout the first floor. We finally removed all of the ugly pink carpet. The floor has character. It’s beautiful. We refuse to cover it up.

With four little ones around the house, I decided that just maybe I would make a small rug for the living room, you know, to make it a little cozier. So, I found this awesome idea on Pinterest. I got online and ordered 50 feet of cotton aqua yarn. I figured this would solve a couple of problems. I’d get the new experience of making a rug and use up a lot of my yarn stash.

How wrong I was.

Truth: Fifty feet of yarn isn’t very much. My entire rug has a diameter of 22 inches.

Truth: I had so much fun learning a new technique. It took me a few tries to get started on the blanket. It was a learning process. I didn’t even take the duct tape off the end!

Once I got started, I had fun changing colors and watching the rug take shape. It was hard to keep the rope tight. I seriously used muscles that I didn’t even know I had. I finally found a way to burn calories and crochet!

As far as a pattern goes, there wasn’t one. For the first couple of rounds I did two or three stitches in each stitch. After that, I just varied the stitches how I thought they needed to be. As the rug got bigger, I didn’t need to double up on stitches very often, and sometimes I even skipped some to keep the coil tight.

Truth: It may be tiny, but I love my rug!

In the future, I’d love to play with this technique to make some place mats and coasters! Currently, my rug is a little big for my cup of coffee.

Truth: I can’t tell you why the rug was curvy, and I can’t tell you how I got it to lay flat.

Truth: If you put anything new in the house, your kids will find a use for it. I guess maybe they know better than I do!

This is my scrap rug. It didn’t turn out like I thought. I’m not sure it’s useful. It definitely didn’t use up much yarn, but I’m still glad I made it. I’m sure this is not the last rug you’ll see from me, but it’ll be a while. You know, until my muscles heal.
