I finally did it! I had a vision for a star square, and after a couple of weeks of working on it off and on, I’m finished! I can’t wait to make this patriotic square into a full blanket! Below is the free pattern. If you have any questions or find any errors, let me know. It’s a work in progress!

Round 8: Join color 2 with Standing TC in any 3rd DC after the star tip. (Note: The joining spot is only important so all of the stars slant the same way). TC, ch. 2, 2 TC in the same stitch. Corner made. DC in next st. HDC in next st. SC in next 2 SC. FPSC around next st. (tip of star). SC in next 2 st. HDC in next st. DC in next st. [2 TC, ch. 2, 2TC] in next st. Note: Round 8 is basically made up of 2TC, ch. 2, 2TC corner, DC, HDC, 5 SC, HDC, DC, corner. The only thing that changes is that different stitches FP around the tip of the star.
Round 9: Ch. 2 (Counts as first HDC). HDC in next TC. [2HDC, ch. 2, 2HC] in corner space. HDC in each stitch across. Continue this pattern around. Fasten off.
Your square is done and should measure approximately 6 inches! The picture below shows the square with a cream border after it was joined.
I joined four squares together to show how they would look attached using a SC join. You could choose to join your squares in whatever way you prefer. I think these squares would also look nice with plain blocks between them or in different colors for a baby blanket.
