It was one of those days. I was trolling around Facebook and there was my friend… standing in front of a cancer center. Could it be?
A quick Facebook chat revealed the truth: She had just been diagnosed with an aggressive form of breast cancer and had already started chemotherapy. Just like that, her world turned upside down.
I immediately decided to make her some chemo caps, but a post to a crochet forum revealed that many people going through the treatments can’t stand to have something on their head.
Plan B. The Pokemon graphghan. I immediately went out and got the yarn.
Did she need a Pikachu blanket? Maybe not, but I needed to make it for her. I wanted her to have something that would make her smile through the hard times.
For three weeks, I worked on the blanket. It was a new technique for me, and I was learning as I went. For a graphghan, you basically follow a graph pattern like cross stitch and change yarn and carry yarn. It’s not super complicated, but there is definitely a learning curve.
Something cool happened. Every time I picked up my blanket, I was reminded to pray for my friend. And she’s amazing. Through everything, she has a smile on her face and unwavering faith that God will use this for good.
This. This is why I crochet.
