I’ve never done a pattern before, so bear with me. This blanket is not original or unique. It doesn’t have any surprises, but it is one I’ve done time and time again. It works up quickly and it is join as you go, so there are no squares to sew together in the end.
It is worked up first as a strip, then the next strip is attached to the edge as you go. Crocheting over ends also helps to save time in the long run.
Ok. Here goes nothing.
Color Block Baby Blanket
Yarn: Bernat Softee Baby Chunky in three colors. Note, the variegated yarn is not sold in the same yardage, so make sure you get three skeins of variegated.
Color A: 2 skeins; Color B: 3 skeins (or 2 if not variegated); Color C: 2 skeins
Hook size: L
Strip 1:
Row 1: With A, ch 22. DC in 4th ch from hook and in each st across (20 DC)
Row 2: Ch 2 (counts as 1st DC), turn. DC in next st and each st across ending with DC in the top of the turning chain. (20 DC)
Rows 3-12: Repeat Row 2. Fasten off after Row 12.
Row 13: Turn. Attach B to the first st with sl st and ch 2 OR a standing DC. DC in each st across.
Rows 14-24: Repeat Row 2. Fasten off after Row 12.
Rows 25-36: Repeat Rows 13-24 with C.
Rows 37-48: Repeat with A.
Rows 49-60: Repeat with B. Fasten off.
Strip 2 (made being attached to the side of Strip 1): This is where it gets a little tricky, but once you get the hang of it, it’s easy.
Row 1: Attach B to the bottom of the very first DC with a slip stitch.
Ch 21. DC in 4th ch from hook. DC in next 18 ch.
YO, insert hook in same stitch as join, pull up a loop. Pull yarn through 2 loops. Insert hook in top of same stitch as join. Pull up a loop. Pull through all three loops. (This will look a little sloppy, but it won’t in the end).
Row 2: Ch 2. Slip st into the top of the last stitch of row 2. Turn, DC in next 19 stitches.
Row 3: ch 2. Turn. DC in next 18 DC. YO, insert hook in bottom of the last DC of Row 3 on strip one. Pull up a loop, YO, pull through both loops on hook. insert hook in the top of the same st. Pull up a loop. Pull through all three loops on hook.
Repeat rows 2 and 3 until the end of the strip.
Continue in the pattern shown below.
Fasten off yarn and weave in ends.
This blanket will be ok without a border, but I prefer one.
Border:
Round 1: Attach B in any stitch. SC around with 3 SC in every corner and 2 SC in the side of each DC on the long edges. Join with sl st to 1st SC.
Round 2: Ch 1. SC in every SC around with 3 SC in every corner. Join with sl st.
Round 3: Repeat Round 2. Fasten off.
Round 4: Attach C in any stitch. SC around with 3 SC in every corner. Join with sl st. Fasten off.
Round 5: Attach A in any stitch. SC around with 3 SC in every corner. Join with sl. st. Fasten off. Weave in ends.
There you have it! The color block baby blanket!
I’ve never written a pattern before. If you decide to make this, please let me know how it goes.
